Technology should support you, not replace you.

Carl Hayden Smith studies consciousness through practice, fieldwork and research: sound, breath, psychedelics, immersive media and designed context. Contextology gathers the work into a set of practice frameworks for developing perception, agency and altered traits. The papers follow the practice.

First research subject to sustain the full five doses in Imperial College London's extended-state DMT (DMTx) pilot.

Contextology is the study and practice of how environments, technologies, rituals and social conditions shape perception, agency and inner life.

We are increasingly surrounded by tools that perform our cognitive, imaginative and relational work for us. The question is not whether technology is good or bad, but whether a given context strengthens the human capacities it touches or quietly replaces them.

A scaffold for the mind, not a substitute for it. Context trains perception. Practice determines what remains.

featured

Holotechnica

state regulation, multi purpose daily protocol design

Composing repeatable experience stacks that convert short-lived state shifts into traits that stay when the scaffolding drops.

Context Engineering

perceptual widening, epistemic resilience, relational capacity

Treat context as a medium. Read room, forest, timetable as live interfaces. Then change them on purpose.

Double Consciousness

perceptual widening, relational capacity, epistemic resilience

Holding more than one experiential field at once without thinning either. Clarity under split attention, not divided attention.

Umwelt Hacking

perceptual widening, epistemic resilience

Borrowing perceptual worlds from other species, neurotypes, and tools to break the default human model of what counts as intelligence.

Hyperhuman Methods

multi purpose daily protocol design

The working library. State regulation, perceptual widening, epistemic resilience, relational capacity, all turned into daily protocols.

Museum of Consciousness

relational capacity, epistemic resilience, perceptual widening

A live archive of inner experience. Participants co-curate audio exhibits, practice high-resolution reporting, and close the loop between art, measurement, and iteration.

Personal Operating System

multi purpose daily protocol design, state regulation

Your own daily and weekly routine, assembled from the methods you've actually tested. The thing you leave a residency with that keeps working at home.

/ about

The practitioner behind the practice.

Carl Hayden Smith teaches at the University of East London, founded the Museum of Consciousness, and co-founded the Cyberdelic Nexus. Three decades of research into how technology can widen human perception rather than replace it.

These days that means the Feÿtopia Hyperhuman lab in Burgundy, a Museum of Consciousness expedition on the Nile, and a steady run of talks and keynotes.
